Obituary for Elizabeth Conley (Calhoun)

Elizabeth “Betty” Conley, 89, peacefully passed away on March 24, 2023, after a lengthy illness at NHC Lewisburg.

Betty was born in Oneida, New York, to James and Loretta Calhoun. She resided in Canastota, New York, for most of her life until moving to Tennessee to be closer to her son, Don Conley, and grandchildren.

She graduated from Canastota High School and went on to attend Central City Business Institute, leading to a long career of clerical and bookkeeping jobs. She truly treasured the friendships she forged throughout her career. Before retiring, she worked at a daycare center where she enjoyed caring for and rocking babies.

Betty married Don Conley in 1954 and the two were married for 49 years until Don passed away in 2004.

Don and Betty were blessed with one son and two grandchildren who were her pride and joy. She and Don never missed one of their games, recitals, or performances. Betty was known to always have a full-size candy bar in her purse for her grandkids when she watched them after school. She also had two great grandchildren who brought her many moments of happiness in her later years.

Betty was an avid reader and always had a mystery novel handy. During afternoons watching her grandchildren, she could often be found watching Murder She Wrote, Matlock, or Magnum P.I. Betty loved knitting, crocheting and crafts, attending craft shows with her husband and creating ornaments, a few of which still reside on her family’s Christmas trees.

Betty is survived by her son, Donald (Susan) Conley; grandchildren Donnie (Emily) Conley and Cady (Peyton) Branch and great grandchildren, Charlotte Conley and Sophia Branch, all of Tennessee, and several nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her husband Don; parents; brothers, Donald (Martha) Calhoun and Walter Calhoun; sisters; Dorothy (Reggie) Wall, Agnes (Vernon) Neis, and Martha (Don) Shuler.

A private memorial will be held by the family. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Betty’s memory to the Canastota Fire department, Canastota, NY.

The family would like to express their thanks for the care provided by the staff at NHC Lewisburg as they showed great compassion to Betty and her family.

London Funeral Home and Crematory is honored to assist the family with the arrangements.
